Landform Activity for Kids

Earth Science Unit Study

Week 10: We used bread dough to make geographic landforms.

While some geographic landform terms such as lake and island are part of our everyday vocabulary, others such as atoll, fjord and palisade may seem foreign. After reading a few pages a day in the book Geography from A to Z: A Picture Glossary (Trophy Picture Books) and reading about the landform activity at The Tiger Chronicle did, we made our own set of landforms.

While Tiger made his landforms from a type of plaster, ours were made from bread dough and a yogurty topping. - (Libum recipe explained in this post, minus the honey.)

With the bread dough, my son placed a different landform into each muffin tin.

These opposite landforms were on the required list:

Cape and Bay
Lakes and Archipelago
Peninsula and Gulf
Lake and Island
Strait and Isthmus

The remaining tins were used for other landforms.

A delta with a river and nearby mountain were created with the remaining dough.

The water was represented with the topping. It was created by mixing, blueberry yogurt, bananas, quark (a type of cream cheese), zucchini and kiwi in a food processor.

  1. This is a really cool idea! The landforms look good enough to eat. Did you eat them in the end?
