Leukemia - Maintenance Week 13 - Swimming

We had a super busy week.

Wednesday we visited a Roman Museum near the hospital.

Then we spent some time playing at the pirate ship park.

Friday night the Landau zoo had a Dream Night for sick and handicapped children. The monkeys were active and they all got to throw a fish in for the sea lions.

And in between, on Thursday we went swimming. The weather was beautiful and Jemma had this smile on her face the entire time. She was so happy to be swimming again. Before she got sick she was well on her way to becoming an independent swimmer. She was proficient at swimming beneath the surface and could even retrieve pool rings from the bottom in 5 ft deep water.

Not being in the water for an entire year was a big setback. Thursday she was quite timid when first entering the water. Blowing air out of her nose and mouth and swimming under the water had to be relearned. But, by the time we left she had that figured out, and was working on swimming the crawl with her face in the water, and doing lots of very active play. I was so impressed with her determination and progress during the 3 hours we spent at the pool.

She wasn't the only one who had fun. The older kids were thrilled to be swimming again. Although they swam several times over the past year, they too did not go as often as in the past. I love to swim and also had a great time. We were all exhausted at the end of the day.

We are still visiting the hospital on a weekly basis for blood checks and Jemma continues to take chemotherapy pills at home. Last week her white blood cell count was above 4000. This was far above the desired level of 2000 so her medication was increased. Other than that life is quite normal around here.
