Leukemia - How is Jemma? - Day 116

Jemma is back in the hospital for a five day planned visit. Yesterday when she arrived she began a high dose of hydrating fluid which she will receive the entire visit. That means lots of pee-pee. Last night we were awake every hour to use the bathroom and I expect that to continue for the next three nights.

In the morning she was not allowed to eat anything because she had a lumbar puncture. Afterwards she was required to lay down for two hours so the injected chemo could make its way through her spinal fluid to her brain. In addition, laying down helps to prevent headaches caused by the procedure.

She laid down for 1 hour and 45 minutes, but had to sit up when the clowns showed up in our room for a visit. Despite the fact that she ate part of her breakfast laying down, she did end up with a headache in the afternoon.
In addition to the lumbar puncture in the morning, she began a 24 hour dose of methotrexate administered through her iv.

So needless to say, our physical activity level is pretty low, but we have had a lot of time to work on reading, playing Farkle (thank you Ryan - everyone loves this game), crafts and educational iPad games. Surprisingly enough, time goes by pretty fast in the hospital.

Just before we left for the hospital my mother-in-law arrived. We spent the afternoon outside playing together, then Jemma and I went to the hospital and my husband went to work. I'm glad she made it here when she did. She is needed.
