Celtic history co-op. Week 6: Runes

Week 6: We made runes.

The Celts had a rich tradition of oral storytelling. The history of their land and people was preserved from generation to generation through druids who were expert story tellers. Once the Celts came into contact with other cultures a system of runic writing developed. There were several different runic alphabets used by northern European people.

We got the chance to make our own runes using air dry clay, toothpicks and other dough type tools.

A sample alphabet was printed so the kids had something to decode.

To read more about our homeschool history co-op activities one of the cultures below.

Inspirations from Celtic history co-op. Week 3a: Jewelry

After the jewelry making Celtic history co-op we came home with borrowed books, beads, tools..... Basically everything you need to create jewelry. We made rings, necklaces, pins, bracelets and I'm sure there is more jewelry making in our future.

Thank you miss Melissa for introducing us to this cool craft!

Leaning Tower of Pisa

The leaning tower of Pisa is located in the Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa, Italy. It took 177 years to build and leans about 4 degrees. The tilt is due to the ground settling under the tower. All of the buildings in the Piazza are white and elaborately decorated.

Lake Como

When we were walking past this dock, this elderly lady ran out to see the kids. She wanted them to help her feed the ducks. This one woman made Lake Como feel so small and friendly.

Lake Como is in the Lombardy region of Italy (north). Tourists visit for the slow pace of life. There are many narrow walkways through the villages. The lake is shaped like an upside down letter Y and ferry boats are one of the main modes of transportation between lakeside villages.

Italian Mountains

Italian Wine

Once the trouble caused by the pirates was over, farmers moved into the Cinque Terre and began growing grapes. Today most of the vineyards are abandoned as owners choose more lucrative careers in the tourism industry.

Trouble with Pirates

Until around 1200 AD pirates terrorized the Italian coast. There were watch towers in the five villages of Cinque Terre and when pirates were spotted a fire was lit to warn adjacent villages. Two watch towers can be seen in the above photos.

Italian Houses

In Cinque Terre Italy most shutters are green and houses come in a variety of colors including pink, yellow and white. Local law actually says that house colors must match the local vegetation and flowers.

Love Padlocks

Love padlocks symbolize a couples love for each other. Their love is sealed with a lock and the key is thrown away. Padlocks can be seen many places in Europe and are especially common on Lovers Lane in Cinque Terre, Italy.
